Running Rebels

Hang on for a minute...we're trying to find some more stories you might like.

Every year when the weather gets chilly, Roncalli’s Walk-athon rolls in. Most students do as the title suggests and walk the approximated five kilometers of the course. However some choose (or are forced) to take on the walk running. The Rebel basketball team is the main group of students required to run walkathon.

“It felt amazing,” said basketball player Christian Stewart when asked about how it felt to finish.

The team uses the walk as apart of their condition-ing and is also used as a good way to represent the team for the entire school to see. But, alongside the basketball team are your average everyday rebels. Junior Cameron Irwin was one these rebels.

“Sam Hansen told me in 2nd period to run it so I just decided to do it” said Irwin. Irwin had little time to prepare, but powered through the difficult task regardless.

“I wanted to quit about halfway through considering I was unprepared and out of shape,” said Irwin. Regardless of the short notice of the task, he completed the walk with a good attitude.

Not all of the runners are students though. Leading the walk- ers and most of the runners were Mrs. Bohn, Mrs. Stackhouse, and Mrs. Rose. These three took on the challenge and decided to run the 5 kilometers together.

“I’ve always run it. I have run it 13 years; simply because I can.”said Bohn.

Another member of the trio was happy when she made it to the stadium.

“I was excited because this year was the fastest I have ever run it,” said Rose.

The third member of this trio, Mrs. Stackhouse used walk- athon for more of a training day.

“I am running a half marathon this weekend and this helped with my training,” said Stackhouse.

Walkathon is a 26 year old school tradition and those who run it truly enrich its importance. These runners take on a school sponsored task and complete it with meaningful purpose
