Boys’ volleyball starts strong

New team is force to be reckoned with

Hang on for a minute...we're trying to find some more stories you might like.

After losing team members to illnesses and other circumstances in addition to saying goodbye to a number elite seniors, the future of the boys’ volleyball team did not looking too promising.  However, after putting in hard work and giving their all on game days, the team was able to destroy their opponents in the first half of their season.

“We practice Monday through Friday [for] two or more hours a day,” junior Kyle Carpenter said. “If we don’t have a game or tournament on Saturday, we are likely to practice then as well. We have been preparing since last season ended with scheduled times for lifting and conditioning as well as open gyms throughout the summer so that we stay fresh.”

The team continued to practice since the season ended last May.  Since then, many members have joined travel teams to focus on certain skills and abilities.  In addition, the dedicated coaching staff has ensured the success of the team with continuous practice and conditioning.

“As a coaching staff we believe that matches are won or lost in practice,” varsity coach John Kesterson said.  We strive to script every practice to push the players to improve every drill. Practices are fast paced with rigorous drills designed to push them to be better than they think they can be.”

The team has won eight out of ten games this season and have also performed strongly at their two tournaments so far this season.  The tone that has been set thus far for the team indicates that the Rebels are a team to watch for later in the season.

My goal and the team’s goal is obviously [advancing to] state,” junior Nick Williams said.

Williams believes that the rigorous training has paid off for the most part, and he believes that the team can succeed if they continue to focus on each game.  If the team can handle their competition, Williams’ desire for the team might become a reality.
