Hang on for a minute...we're trying to find some more stories you might like.

The boys’ soccer team began its season on Thursday with a game against Southport.  The JV team tied the Cardinals 2-2, and the varsity team won an exciting game 3-2. Junior Mateo Gonzalez and senior Michael Shirley scored for the Rebels, and the third goal was an own goal, which occurs  when a player accidentally scores for the other team. Junior Robert Thang and Gonzalez were named Players of the Game.

“It was the first time trying out a new formation and, based on that, I think we played well,” senior Luke Dow said.  “We definitely still have some aspects of the game that we need to work on, but I am happy with the result.”

Dow is one of three seniors, joined by Shirley and senior Zach Wallem.  Since last season, nine seniors have graduated, making the team very young.

“I’m confident that our talent hasn’t dropped, but I know our experience is different,” head coach Joe Schonegg said.

The change in experience will also bring about a change in team dynamics.

“We have a lot of strong individual players who will have to learn to work as a team because we haven’t played together,” junior Daniel Woodruff said.

Another change for the team involves the sectional schedule.  The team will face more competitive teams than they have in the past, including Center Grove, Southport and Perry Meridian.

“We don’t have many easy wins, and our sectional got a lot harder,” senior Dow said.

Even with the change in the schedule, Schonegg is excited for what the season will bring and is very confident in the team.

The boys’ team will play Franklin Central tonight at 7:00 p.m.
