As the school year comes to a close, teachers plan trips and look forward to fun events happening during their summer break.
Happening only two days after the last day of school is the Indy 500. Looking forward to this very much is the Director of Campus Ministry, Mrs. Katie Hibner. Starting off the day, Hibner’s family parks at Speedway High School at 5:00 am
to make breakfast before walking to the track.
“My favorite traditions of the race are the singing of Back Home Again in Indiana, the Archbishop offering the invocation, and the flyover. It really makes you proud to be a Hoosier,” Hibner said.
After the race concludes, Hibners family loves to watch the victory lap of the winner. That evening they spend watching the rerun of the race on TV to see all the action they might have not been able to see from their seats.
The Sunday after graduation, Science Department Chair, Mr. Ben North, is headed down to Tampa. While North will be grading AP chemistry exams, later in the summer months he would like to go to an amusement park to have some fun.
“I would also like to go to an amusement park somewhere, maybe Cedar Point or a water park in the Wisconsin Dells,” said North.
In the English department, Mr. Phil Milroy has two trips planned for his summer break. The first trip planned is to Cincinnati the first weekend of summer. The whole Milroy family will be taking
family pictures. In late June, Milroy will be heading to Wisconsin. The vacation consists of staying in a cabin with his wife’s family. In between Milroy will be spending time with his two kids Miriam and David.
“We will be taking lots of trips to the zoo and park, walks in the neighborhood, and chalk and bubbles. I also need to sign up my daughter Miriam for swimming lessons,” Milroy said.
Leaving on the day after graduation, part of the Math Department, Co-Chair Miss Lacey Hersman is going to Myrtle Beach. She will be staying with her parents, brother,
sister-in-law, niece, and nephew. After her trip she plans to spend a lot of time with her soccer team here at Roncalli.
“I am excited to step away and recharge with my toes in the sand,” Hersman said.
Spanish teacher Ms. Jill Fortin will be spending her summer working as an Orientation Advisor at IU Bloomington helping new students pick their
classes. In her free time, Fortin likes to go walking on different trails around Bloomington with her husky. Fortin also catches up with people she doesn’t get to see a lot during the school year.
“My fiancé and I also try to visit at least one new place for a couple days; the past couple years we went to Madison and Rockville,” said Fortin.
Up in the Theology department Miss Maria Shroeder is planning on heading down with her family to Texas in early
June. The Shroeder family is planning to explore Waco, Austin, and Galveston. Shroeder also is a bridesmaid in her best friend’s wedding later in June.
“During summer break, my hobby is definitely traveling to new places and visiting National Parks,” said Shroeder.
On the Fourth of July, many of the teachers have fun plans and traditions. Math
teacher Mrs. Angie Toner’s 4th involves family time and fireworks.
“Go America!” Toner said.
Hersman is headed to a small town in West Virginia to visit her grandparents. They sit for the parade and watch fireworks. Milory is hoping to visit his parents in Michigan. There he is excited to watch his kids experience the 4th of July. North is headed to his college roommates lake house in Michigan. He has gone every year since his sophomore year in college and now goes with his wife and daughter.
“Apart from four years ago when his first son was born around the 4th of July, it’s been 25 years in a row. It’s an absolute blast!” said North.
The teachers head out for their deserved, fun summer plans after putting so much effort into a great 23-24’ school year.
