The hot sun beat down on the band as they marched across the green turf in their jet-black uniforms. It was the first home game of the season, and it was time to show off the songs they had been practicing for months.
Many band members, like freshman Jessica Deer, began their marching career with this game.
“For my first game I was really nervous,” Deer said.
Many people do not realize just how much work goes into being in band. Getting ready for their halftime show, concerts, and competition requires hours of practice, inside and outside of school.
“We started prepping for the show around mid-July during band camp. We had band camp from 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. for a week,” Deer said.
While Deer expressed that learning copious amounts of music can be challenging and overwhelming, some things make the struggle worth it.
“My favorite part of the band is the people. I’ve made many friends and met so many new people. Everyone is super kind and funny,” said Deer.
