The freshman cheerleaders are new to the high school scene, but they are building trust in each other and getting fans excited for what is to come.
As freshman Bridget Lehner and the rest of the cheerleaders have been adapting to the new team, they have learned many qualities of becoming a good teammate.
“A good teammate is somebody who cares about the sport, as well as the people,” Lehner said. “They will take care of and check up on one another to make sure everyone is doing okay, mentally and physically. A good teammate will show up and work hard even when they don’t feel super motivated.”
As the season goes by, freshman Olivia Antolin learns more about being a leader. She has also learned many ways to show leadership to not only the cheer program but the rest of the school as well.
“A good way to show leadership on our team is by ‘calling’ a cheer, which means starting a cheer,” Antolin said. “Another good way is to give feedback and help each other so that everyone is doing the same thing.”
Freshman Maryanna Houser agrees that there are many characteristics you need to be a great cheerleader.
“It is important for cheerleaders to be happy and have a lot of energy,” Houser said. “You also need to basically always be smiling, especially when cheering. Another characteristic it is important to have is being peppy and having spirit because during pep rallies and games, a lot of people are watching you so you shouldn’t look like you don’t want to be there.”
