Between decorations and spotlights, behind the curtain and during days of hard rehearsals, this year’s musical is coming to life.
The musical in just a few days of rehearsals has exceeded the teacher’s expectations, including choir teacher Mrs. Shannon Masten.
“This is going to be a fantastic production of ‘Matilda’,” Masten said during the first week of rehearsals. “I am highly impressed with our rehearsals so far. We are way ahead of where we normally are at this point in the rehearsal process.”
Music, dance and artistic expression have always been an important part of the school, something that can be seen in the production of the musical. Which tells the story of an extremely intelligent kid with special powers, who needs to survive to her uncaring family and the principle of her hideous school.
“I expect great musicality, sets like you’ve never seen at Roncalli and fun,” Masten said. “This is a very humorous show and the dark comedy will be a fun new addition to a show for us.”
Not only has it been a great start musically speaking but also between the actors and the crew. Masten is impressed with everyone’s relationship at this early point of the production.
“The most special thing about this show is our cast and crew,” Masten said. “The bond that this ensemble shares is very positive and encouraging. I am so excited to see how they grow as a group over the next two months.”
The expectations are high for Matilda to be a great musical, but good results always require effort. Masten mentioned some difficulties they are willing to face in order to bring forward the show.
“There are many challenges with this show,” Masten said. “From difficult music to crazy set pieces and scene changes, we have our work cut out for us. But we are up for the challenge.”
