The team enhances their ability to score by being led by underclassmen, freshmen Reagan Cheesman and Caleb Maurer. Against Beech Grove, both Cheesman and Maurer scored 18 points. Throughout the season, Maurer has averaged 12 points a game and Cheesman with 8.
“We both control the offense as we play the 1 and 2 position (point guard and shooting guard),” Maurer said. “Coach can count on us to take control whenever we are struggling and we play very well together on the court.”
The age gap that freshman players cope with presents a disadvantage for them. In order to deal with this disadvantage, underclassmen must train more frequently.
“Preparations that I have made include being in the weightroom more often because I’m going to be competing against players bigger and stronger than me,” Cheesman said.
The team had multiple goals coming into this year so they can become successful. Their record is 6-5 per January 23, 2025.
“One expectation coming into this year is being the best JV team Roncalli has had by pushing pace during games and running teams out of the gym,” Cheesman said. “Another expectation is that we would develop younger players like Caleb Maurer, Joey Matis, Nolan Denney, and me so that we are ready for varsity next year.”
