At the speech showcase on Monday, February 3rd, both the speech and debate teams presented on topics like awareness on sexual assault and passing bills in court.
“I wrote this story to raise awareness about sexual assault and how many victims are accused of lying or attention-seeking, and their career and relationships are negatively affected from reporting assault,” senior Mary Motyka said.
The students in speech use this extra curricular as a way to speak freely on the problems in the world without interruption and with full attention. Motyka’s courage to speak out on such a powerful issue exemplifies the values of the Speech and Debate team—using words not only to persuade but also to make a meaningful difference.
“As I practiced and delivered speeches, I learned to articulate my ideas more effectively, which has not only enhanced my communication skills but also boosted my self-esteem,” junior Izzy Ahaus said.
Being part of the speech team, Izzy has learned important life skills that she will use for the rest of her life. Beyond competition, the team fosters an environment where students hone valuable skills in argumentation, persuasion, and poise under pressure.
