Flag football is a new sport offered at RHS this fall. Not only do the players have a lot to learn about the sport, but coaches also are figuring out who to play in what positions.
“Coach Antolin, Coach Garro and I are moving players around in different positions on both offense and defense to determine strengths and weaknesses,” Coach Jeff Richardson said.
Another coaching challenge is to help players keep a positive attitude while they learn how to play a new sport.
“The main goal is to improve this season from Day 1 until our tournament ends, and the only way to do that is to teach each player individually and keep their confidence up even when mistakes are made,” Coach Richardson said.
While the coaches are hard at work trying to figure out the best ways to win and overcome their competition, the players have responsibilities as well.
“Work hard, pay attention, and be a good teammate. In addition, we expect them to praise God in the form of competition and good sportsmanship,” Coach Richardson said.
Some girls might think that it would be nerve-racking to play a new sport.
“No, I think it will be an exciting experience for a growing sport,” senior Olivia Lemus said.
It is important to be social whenever you are going out for something new so you can meet new people and make new connections.
“I have many friends on the team, some include girls I met when I moved to Roncalli sophomore year like Brennah Cerney, Claire May, and Anna Willis,” Lemus said.
The team is super ready for their season and can’t wait to see how far they grow.
“I’m so excited and ready for the season because it is a rising sport much like wrestling was when I started, I’m excited to see the growth the team continues to show,”Lemus said.
