Working with both students and the production team, student director senior Lily Babb has the challenging task of helping to organize both cast and crew in preparation for this year’s production of “Matilda”.
With the wide range of tasks and crews required to pull off the show in less than three months, coordinating the work is no simple feat.
“I could also say that the hardest part for me is balancing the cast and crew’s rehearsals, relaying information to over a 100 total kids and between Mr. Anderson, et cetera,” Babb said.
Babb has previously worked on the theater tech team as a part of the stage crew for the past four productions.
“My role for this production is student director, which is a strange jump for me after only ever doing stage crew. This job means that I am, as Mr. Anderson says, an ‘honorary member of every crew’, along with the responsibility of attendance,” Babb said.
With crews ranging from hair and makeup to lights, to properties, theater tech encompasses many different responsibilities behind the scenes of Roncalli’s productions. Students involved in tech may be expected to spend anywhere from three to 15 hours per week working on various tasks and projects leading up to a show to help it run smoothly.
“Some people might see theater as any other random after-school thing, but the fact is that it is definitely more than that. Giving so much of your time and hard-work immerses you even more in theater, and especially when you love the people you get to work with,” Babb said.
Roncalli’s production of “Matilda” opens November 14th and will be sure to showcase the skills and talents of the theater tech team alongside the cast.
