Kass, Roncalli’s fun-loving facility dog, has been part of the community for three years. In 2022, he became Vice President of Happiness, making Roncalli his first job. But his vocation didn’t start there.
“He was trained at the Indiana Women’s Prison for 6 months before he came to us.” Director of Guidance Lisa Beckwith said.
Although Kass didn’t start at Roncalli, he has proved his excellence by walking with students in the halls, visiting classes, and performing small tricks to entertain the school. But his perfection doesn’t end there.
“Kass really is a great dog,” Beckwith said. “He listens very well, he loves to cuddle, and he’s usually very calm.”
Beckwith is Kass’s primary caretaker, which has allowed her to grow close to him. He also enjoys playing fetch, taking naps, and getting treats handed out to students to connect with him. As a 4-year-old Labrador retriever, Kass can learn new tricks quickly and has spurts of boundless energy that fill Roncalli’s halls with blissful joy.
“Kass loves one particular type of squeaky ball,” Beckwith said. “He can be slightly entertained by others, but there is one type that gets him very excited.”
During passing periods, students can find Kass sitting next to lockers, receiving head scratches from students, or lying in his chair in the guidance office, taking a nap after a hard day’s work, keeping Roncalli a happy school.
