Roncalli holds an hour-long competition between staff and the senior class each year. Competitions like Movie trivia, musical chairs, and volleyball give people the chance to show who truly rules the school.
“I stood up and my team was cheering me, along with the whole school, and then when I was going back to my seat everyone put their hand out and started high-fiving me it felt amazing,” senior Gabriel Ramirez said, who won the relay race. “Even after the pep rally was over and I walked down the hallways, people kept coming up to me and saying good job. This is going to be a highlight of my senior year. What was most impressive to me was that this is my first year here as I’m a transfer student and having everyone cheer me on was amazing.”
Pep rallies and events like this give students a chance to unwind and show their school spirit. The senior VS staff games are highly anticipated during the second semester, and students always show their competitiveness, even in the stands.
“Senior vs staff games are a great opportunity to unite the student body and give the seniors a chance to participate in a Roncalli tradition, whether by competing in the games or cheering on their friends and classmates from the bleachers,” senior Grace Daming said.
With a score of 4:1, the seniors took the win by a landslide. Teachers were able to take the win in the guess the movie competition and were neck and neck in many other competitions, like knockout. Michael Wantz, vice principal of student affairs, participated in this competition, along with announcing the entire game.
“I think it is great for the students to see the staff in a different light/atmosphere. We try and change the games up each year. It is a fun day!” Wantz said.
During the volleyball competitions, seniors who play the sport have a chance to show off their leadership skills and coach the team to victory. Senior Logan Bell, varsity girls volleyball player, showed her techniques to win while standing on the sideline.
“It was fun to step into the coaching role for the game, especially with the other senior volleyball players,” Bell said. “My favorite part was dressing up in Coach Raz’s game day outfits.”
All students earned an out-of-uniform day because of the Roncalli sweep, and Juniors are beginning to prepare for next year’s victory.
