The girls’ wrestling team wrapped up its season at the 2nd IHSAA state tournament January 16, 2026. Seniors Claire May and Oivia Lemus both competed for the Royals.
May won her first round match by fall finishing her career as a 4x qualifier, 3x State placer and 105 career victories.
Lemus finishes her career as a 2x State Qualifier with 50 career victories in just two seasons as a Royal.
Both May and Lemus served as dedicated ambassadors for Roncalli, demonstrating leadership and sportsmanship throughout the entire season and state finals.
“The most challenging part was social media, with people ranking you and saying how they think you’ll do. It can really get in your head and affect how you perform,” May said. “Something I learned that I will take with me is to never stop trying your hardest, and that it is okay to fail if you give it your all.”
May doesn’t know if she will be doing wrestling as a sport in college yet, but she is leaning more towards wrestling club.
Wrestling for the Royals was more than a sport for Lemus; it was a journey of resilience and learning.
“The most challenging part of being a wrestler at Roncalli was being a girl wrestler my first year, because there were only three girls and we practiced with the guys.” Lemus said.
While Lemus encountered several setbacks, each challenge became a pivotal learning opportunity in her wrestling career.
“Wrestling has taught me more discipline than a classroom ever could, from the weight cuts and hard losses I’ve definitely reshaped my definition of discipline.” Lemus said.
Lemus plans on doing a wrestling club at Indiana University while doing what she loves but also focusing on her education.
