As the first semester comes to an end, students enter a season of studying, focus, and determination. With finals approaching, students and staff alike are all preparing and working to ensure the academic success and confident finish to the first semester.
In classrooms and study spaces, students are reviewing notes, organizing study guides, and seeking opportunities for extra help. Grace Field, a teacher in the Theology department, shared how she is going to help her students.
“I have compiled a study guide and assigned them out at least two weeks in advance and put together a folder of all slides from the units and walk together with students and make study folders.” Field said. “We will also take a day to review every unit.”
The counseling department is also playing a vital role, reminding students about balance, well-being, and stress-management strategies. They help students to know that success begins with adequate rest, proper nutrition, and intentional breaks. Jessica Engel sees some common struggles with her students.
“Procrastination. When you procrastinate, you stress more and get overwhelmed. Planning alleviates that stressor.”
She also offers advice to students as they study .“Plan to take a break. Get out in the fresh air, stretch, go for a walk, take time to exercise, get 8 hours of sleep, and eat healthy snacks.” Engel said.
The school will operate on a modified exam schedule, with two or three tests administered each day to reduce student workload. This schedule allows students more time to study and prepare. It also helps to ensure students maintain their full focus on the finals.
Engel also notes how finals evaluate students and explains that they aren’t just bug tests for students to worry about. Rather, they have a specific purpose that is vital to the academic success Roncalli strives for.
“Finals evaluate the knowledge base of a subject.” Engel said. “Your instructors teach using a curriculum given to them by the State of Indiana. Students are required to know about each of those standards set forth by the state. The final exam gives the student a chance to show what they’ve learned this semester!”
Math teacher Lacy Herschel explains the best way a student can properly study in order to secure their desired grade.
“The study guide is crucial, especially when students come in and check answers.”
Herschel said. “I always have answers posted. Also make sure you have your final exam review done in advance so you can ask questions when going over instead of trying to play catch-up.”
As the countdown to finals week continues, students are reminded that preparation and balance go hand in hand. With support from teachers, peers, and the school community, students can finish the semester strong.
