With the holiday season in full swing, freshmen Alandra Deardorff, Lilly Jacobowitz, and sophomore Lindsey Bender shared their family Christmas traditions. They each had something different to say; Jacobowitz mentioned her large family, Bender her favorite German dish, and Deardorff her Christmas cookie baking. The traditions ranged from common to slightly unusual, highlighting the differences families have in their yearly holiday customs. Jacobowitz explains her family tradition and what she likes about it.
“My family all has dinner, and then we go to open gifts around the living room,” Jacobowitz said. “There’s a lot of us. I like our tradition because we all get together and we’re all there at the same time. That usually can’t happen because of sports and other things.”
Bender’s family makes a special dish commemorating their German roots.
“Every Christmas Eve, we make Maultaschen, which is a German food,” Bender said. “My great grandma made it every Christmas eve, since she lived in Germany. The recipe was passed down to my mom, and we’ve made it ever since.”
For Deardorff, Christmas brings traditional activities her family loves.
“We put the tree up together and watch a Christmas movie,” Deardorff said. “We also all bake cookies. We used to do a real tree, but now we do a fake one. Also, now our neighbors come over to help make cookies as well.”
