Mrs. Perry, social worker at Roncalli High School sets up a formal wear shop where students can donate new/ gently used formal wear to Guidance. Students will be able to receive a 1 day out of uniform if they donate a dress or suit. Students are able to shop during periods 5, 6, and 7 in the SLC. Everything is free so there is no need to bring in money to shop. Any remaining formal will be donated to Isaiah 117 House.
Mrs. Perry explains how the shop is important to students and why it’s important to have one.
“The formal wear swap helps students in need of formal wear be able to get something at no cost so they can enjoy prom, homecoming, or other celebrations. It is also a great way to reuse formal wear that otherwise may just be sitting in the back of a closet. All left over donations then go to Isaiah 117, who support children and teens awaiting placement in the foster care system,” Perry said.
Mrs Perry continues to explains how she will continue to have the formal shop.
“One of our students shared with me that she was not going to be able to go to a dance due to the expense of the evening, but having a dress and shoes now, she will be able to go. I know this is true for many others, as well. So we will absolutely continue holding the formal shop as long as our students can benefit,” Perry said.
Senior Kimberly Zayas-Flores. one of the students who went to the shop explains how amazing it is that the school has a formal shop for students.
“It’s a good thing that the school has this yearly, I went to the shop because there’s stores didn’t have good dresses. I would look at these dresses and they would be to overprices,” Zayas says.
There were many students at the shop and with their friends having fun trying dresses, shoes, and suits on. We will definitely look forward to next year’s formal wear shop.
